G2 Consulting Group is expanding its Hot-Mix-Asphalt (HMA) testing capabilities at its Troy laboratory with the addition of a new Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC). The new machine is a Model AFG2 manufactured by Pine Test Equipment, Inc. The SGC will allow G2 Consulting to test and determine the volumetric properties of the newer Superpave HMA mixtures (MDOT E series mixes) that are being used more and more by our local and regional agency clients.
What is Superpave?
Superpave stands for Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements. It is a mixed-design method that makes the best use of asphalt paving technology and enhances asphalt pavements’ ability to balance the high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking characteristics of asphalt concrete. Superpave replaces the Hveem and Marshall methods.
Determining volumetric properties of compacted HMA samples is an important component of mix design development and project quality control and quality assurance testing. With the older Marshall designed mixes, this was relatively easy with simple mechanical compaction equipment. Superpave mixes require the much more sophisticated SGC to compact the laboratory samples for testing. The SGC allows us to produce samples in our laboratory representing a variety of different projected traffic loadings using compaction methods that more closely simulate mix compaction under repeated vehicle wheel passes rather than compaction with a smooth drum roller. Many regional agencies are requiring volumetric properties tests as part of standard QA/QC testing, and it is anticipated that MDOT Local Agency Projects will require QA volumetric testing for Marshall and Superpave HMA mixtures in the near future.

It’s Orange Barrel season again in Michigan. Like most municipalities, the City of Southfield, MI, got to work reconstructing its main roads. Its a tight timeline to get it all done before winter hits, however, G2 Consulting Group prides itself in Smart. Results. Fast.
In 2017, G2 Consulting Group provided materials testing services for the concrete reconstruction of Evergreen Road from 9 Mile Road to the Northwestern Highway Service Drive. Florence Cement Company, working as a subcontractor for Dan’s Excavating, Inc., placed approximately 8,000 cubic yards of grade P1 Modified concrete as pavement with integral curb for the project. Services were provided for OHM Advisors and the City of Southfield.

The 6,300 square-foot, two-story addition features a full cat walk and tension grid with highly specialized mechanical and electrical systems. In addition, spaces include two offices and staging scene shop for performances.
Working with Cunningham-Limp, G2 Consulting Group provided geotechnical engineering and special inspection / material testing for the new Black Box Theater Expansion.
G2 provided special inspections and material testing during construction including evaluation of earthwork operation and utility backfill, foundation construction, masonry evaluation, pre-cast plank and structural steel evaluation, and interior floor slab and site concrete evaluation.

In June 2016, Cunningham-Limp Development Company completed construction of a new multimillion-dollar facility for Korean-based Shield Material Handling. The 75,050 square-foot warehouse and distribution structure is located in Auburn Hills, MI. It provides complete logistics services to tier one automotive suppliers in the region. It also provides warehousing and distribution services for products and parts.

Prior to construction, G2 explored the site to determine and evaluate general subsurface conditions and developed related foundation recommendations for support of the proposed structure, as well as, pavement recommendations, and construction considerations related to the development. Our special inspections / materials testing scope of our services included evaluating earthwork operations; utility installation; observing retaining wall installation; performing foundation inspection and concrete inspection for foundations, flatwork, and site concrete; performing structural steel evaluation, masonry inspection, and bituminous paving.

The project was challenged with poor subsurface conditions that required the removal and replacement of soft/loose uncontrolled fill soils with engineered fill to support the foundations and floor slab. In addition, a variety of subgrade stabilization techniques were used to minimize removal of non-organic fill soils for support of pavements.

With any design/build project, turnaround time on project deliverables is critical to meeting construction milestones. G2 performed this significant geotechnical investigation in a short period of time and provided preliminary design recommendations shortly after completion of field report to allow the design / build team to move forward with their design.
G2 Consulting Group performed a geotechnical investigation and provided special inspections/materials testing for the new $48 million, 180,000 square foot, three-story Magna Seating of America headquarters in Novi, MI. Site paving, truck docks, site utilities, and a retaining wall were also constructed in association with the project. Magna Seating will consolidate activities into a single facility to house engineering, research and development, and sales and marketing teams.
