Huron Academy expands operations in Macomb County

Huron Academy, a tuition-free public charter school for 3rd through 7th grade students, expanded its operations in 2015 by purchasing a 19-acre parcel along Utica Road in Clinton Township.

Scope

The new, $8.4 million, 32,000 square foot, single-story building features 22 classrooms, computer labs; a gymnasium; special spaces for music and art; a science lab; and a state-of-the-art media center. The site was once home to Bishop Gallagher’s athletic fields. Some of the existing athletic fields are preserved for use today.

G2 Services Provided:  G2 Consulting Group worked with Partners in Architecture of Mt. Clemens and provided geotechnical engineering services. G2 also provided special inspections and materials testing services for general contractor Cunningham-Limp Company of Novi.

In addition to special inspections and materials testing, G2 evaluated earthwork operation and utility backfill, foundation construction, masonry evaluation, structural steel evaluation, and interior floor slab and site concrete evaluation.

Challenges / Solutions

G2 Consulting is used to working on tight construction schedules, especially knowing that the school bell will ring for new students in the fall. G2 overcame several challenges with the site which included building pad earthwork with high moisture clay soils that occurred in October and challenging subgrade conditions in the Spring for support of floor slabs and pavements.

Science and Engineering Center Opens at UDJHSA

The Science and Engineering Center opened its doors to students in 2016 and is the largest addition to the campus since the main school building was constructed in 1931. The center represents the largest dollar investment in science and technology at any Michigan high school in recent years and positions U of D Jesuit as a leader in STEM education in Southeast Michigan.

Scope

The new $16 million, four-story, 40,000 square foot addition artfully blends historic features of the original structure with artwork and iconography. Located between the main school building and Jesuit residence, the state-of-the-art facility doubles the classroom and laboratory space for biology, chemistry, and physics; adds laboratory space for eco-car and robotics programs, engineering activities; and it includes dedicated classrooms and laboratories for seventh and eighth grade students.

Working with Wold Architects and McCarthy and Smith, Inc., G2 Consulting Group provided geotechnical engineering services and performed special inspections and materials testing during construction.

Challenges / Solutions

Challenged with upper weak or loose sands with more competent clay soils deeper, G2 performed extensive analysis to provide improved support for the building foundations..

Detroit Country Day School Black Box Theater Expansion

Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, MI., expanded its performing arts facility to enhance its nationally recognized program. The school provides students with a well-rounded liberal arts education in academics, athletics, and the arts. The Fine and Performing Arts Department at Country Day School provides a comprehensive arts program to support the school’s commitment to superior education. Drama, theater, music, visual arts, and dance courses enable students to reach their full potential and encourage students to experiment with and develop creativity.

Scope

The 6,300 square-foot, two-story addition features a full cat walk and tension grid with highly specialized mechanical and electrical systems. In addition, spaces include two offices and staging scene shop for performances.

Working with Cunningham-Limp, G2 Consulting Group provided geotechnical engineering and special inspection / material testing for the new Black Box Theater Expansion.

G2 provided special inspections and material testing during construction including evaluation of earthwork operation and utility backfill, foundation construction, masonry evaluation, pre-cast plank and structural steel evaluation, and interior floor slab and site concrete evaluation.

Waterford Mott High School Expansion

Waterford, Michigan

 

Waterford School District added 55,000 square feet to Waterford Mott High School, including a new gymnasium and auditorium. Unsuitable soils made construction of conventional shallow foundations difficult. G2 Consulting Group reviewed a number of alternatives to identify the best approach. G2 assisted during construction to confirm that design intent was followed in the field.

Scope

Prior to construction, G2 performed a geotechnical investigation including soil borings and test pits to define soil and groundwater conditions and developed recommendations for foundation design and construction. During construction, G2 performed all QC/QA testing, including auger-cast pile installation and static load testing.

Challenges/Solutions

      • Unsuitable soil conditions consisting of fill and organic matter were found on site to depths of up to nine feet. G2 considered several foundation alternatives to address variable soil conditions and recommended extending strip and spread footings through the unsuitable material, widening existing foundations to support the adjacent loads, and using a tangent force auger cast retaining/foundation system.
      • When the construction team was in the process of removing unsuitable soils near existing foundations to accommodate widening, the team realized that organic matter extended below the existing foundations as well. G2 quickly evaluated the situation on site and designed and installed an auger cast pile foundation in one day.
      • G2 observed construction operations and performed tests during all phases of construction to verify design intent: earthwork operations; auger cast pile installation and subsequent load tests, excavation and backfill of utilities and foundations, concrete placement for foundations and floor slabs, construction of an MSE wall in the auditorium area, grout and mortar testing for masonry construction, steel erection and pavement construction.

Smart. Results. Fast. Soil conditions were less than ideal for the planned construction. G2 developed a cost effective multi-faceted approach and offered real time response to unexpected conditions, maintaining the construction schedule.

Troy School District Facilities Improvement Project

Troy, Michigan

Troy School District implemented a $125 million program of improvements needed to maintain healthy, safe, and suitable learning environments for its students. These improvements included building components, energy savings initiatives, facilities maintenance, and additions. G2 Consulting Group assisted in this district-wide project, working with TMP Architecture and Barton Malow Company.

Troy School District

Scope

G2 provided geotechnical investigation services for Larson and Boulay Park Middle Schools, and Troy and Athens High Schools. The middle schools and Troy High completed classroom additions; Athens constructed a secure entrance and canopy.

G2 also provided construction testing services for new and reconstructed parking lots and secure entrance additions at elementary schools, including Morse, Bernard, Troy Union, Martell, Costello, and Wattles.

Challenges/Solutions

    • Deep fill soils with organic matter were present at many of the elementary schools where new pavements and bus loops were constructed. These soils cannot support pavement. G2 developed recommendations including geotextile and a thickened section for undercutting, reducing construction costs for the new pavement sections.
    • Executing a project of this magnitude in an abbreviated timespan requires extremely efficient execution. Because G2 is located near all of the construction sites, we were readily available to the contractor for on site testing services. Project managers were also available when an inspection question arose. This minimized potential delays in the construction schedule.

Allen Park High School

Allen Park, Michigan

Allen Park Public Schools added 800,000 square feet of new construction to Allen Park High School, including a two-story, 650-seat auditorium with a full orchestra pit and a new natatorium. One of the district’s first steps was to hire G2 Consulting Group to perform a geotechnical investigation and to develop foundation recommendations.

Challenges/Solutions

  • The footprint included a shallow surface “crust” of stiff cohesive soil underlain by soft “toothpaste” consistency clay.
  • To address the site conditions, G2 designed deep foundations consisting of 90-foot long, 100-ton steel H-piles bearing on the underlying hardpan and bedrock, confirming capacity with a pile load test.
  • Adjacent structures needed to be protected during construction, including the existing school, a 50-foot deep sewer interceptor, and residences.
  • G2 performed ground vibration investigation and monitoring to evaluate and monitor vibration levels to ensure that no damage was done to nearby structures.
  • G2 also performed noise monitoring to verify compliance with local noise ordinances for surrounding residential neighborhoods.

Smart. Results. Fast. G2 designed an efficient foundation system to address subsurface construction hurdles, carefully monitored noise and vibration to prevent issues to the nearby community, and kept the project schedule on track.
