Superpave Gyratory Compactor expands Hot Mix Asphalt testing capabilities

G2 Consulting Group is expanding its Hot-Mix-Asphalt (HMA) testing capabilities at its Troy laboratory with the addition of a new Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC).  The new machine is a Model AFG2 manufactured by Pine Test Equipment, Inc. The SGC will allow G2 Consulting to test and determine the volumetric properties of the newer Superpave HMA mixtures (MDOT E series mixes) that are being used more and more by our local and regional agency clients.

What is Superpave?

Superpave stands for Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements. It is a mixed-design method that makes the best use of asphalt paving technology and enhances asphalt pavements’ ability to balance the high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking characteristics of asphalt concrete. Superpave replaces the Hveem and Marshall methods.

Why is it important?

Determining volumetric properties of compacted HMA samples is an important component of mix design development and project quality control and quality assurance testing. With the older Marshall designed mixes, this was relatively easy with simple mechanical compaction equipment. Superpave mixes require the much more sophisticated SGC to compact the laboratory samples for testing. The SGC allows us to produce samples in our laboratory representing a variety of different projected traffic loadings using compaction methods that more closely simulate mix compaction under repeated vehicle wheel passes rather than compaction with a smooth drum roller. Many regional agencies are requiring volumetric properties tests as part of standard QA/QC testing, and it is anticipated that MDOT Local Agency Projects will require QA volumetric testing for Marshall and Superpave HMA mixtures in the near future.

Michigan Concrete Association – growing an industry

Michigan Concrete Association (MCA) is everything concrete in Michigan.  We represent ready mix producers, concrete pavers, cement producers and the affiliate industry.  Our annual conference is designed to help our members learn about new things and to celebrate quality projects. 

“MCA serves as point for current or state of the art technical and business issues facing all sides of the concrete industry,” shares Bruce Wilberding, Principal and lead of G2’s Construction Engineering Services.  “G2 relies on this organization for technical updates and training.”

One of the most exciting highlights from this year’s conference is the announcement  of a new program for construction work force development (click here to learn more).  This program is dedicated to attracting new people to the construction industry in Michigan, which faces a massive labor shortage on the horizon.  MCA is leading a statewide awareness and branding campaign to increase interest in construction careers and simplify the process of finding training and employment in these careers.
The conference also included training on new test procedures for concrete, information on changes in MDOT specifications, announcements on new MDOT projects and updates on ongoing mega-projects,  and discussion on the future of coal (which impacts the supply of fly ash for use in concrete production).
Finally, the conference celebrated cool projects from around the state – G2 Consulting Group was on the team of two award-winning projects: Stephens Road (NB Kelly Rd to I-94) and Beaconsfield Avenue, 9 Mile to Biscayne Ave.

Holiday Inn Express Plymouth Under Construction

A new Holiday Inn Express is being constructed in Plymouth, Michigan. This four-story, 67,000 square foot structure will have 107 rooms, a fitness area and a pool facility. Working with Emmett Contracting, G2 Consulting Group provided geotechnical engineering and special inspections/materials testing services on the project. G2’s value engineering helped to optimize foundation construction and reduce overall construction costs.

Flickinger Elementary Conducts Concrete Testing at G2

When the Academic Talented and Gifted (ATG) program at Flickenger Elementary (Utica, MI) decided to focus on construction this year, G2 was happy to get into “the mix.”

Rob Norris, a parent and employee at Pullman SST, suggested that the students mix concrete and take it to a testing facility to have it tested for strength. The 17 students mixed four different types of cement (1060 PSI and Mapei with and without Aggregate).

Samples of each type of cement were placed in testing tubes, which were taken to G2’s testing lab.  After a tour of the facility, students watched as the concrete they had created was tested. Each cylinder log was placed into a machine to see how much pressure it could withstand.  The whole process was an amazing learning experience for the ATG students and a lot of fun for G2.

Detroit Country Day Completing Fine Arts Facility Expansion

Working with Cunningham Limp, G2 Consulting Group provided geotechnical engineering and special inspections/materials testing services.

Rochester Hills Special Inspection Program

In 2010, Rochester Hills implemented a Special Inspections Program for all new construction in the City, following requirements of the Michigan Building Code. Following an extensive qualifications review process, G2 Consulting Group became one of few firms pre-approved by the Building Department to provide special inspections for steel fabricators, structural steel, concrete, masonry, structural wood, soils, deep foundations, spray-applied fire resistant materials, and EIFS.

Since receiving approval by the City, G2 has completed over 20 special inspections for construction in Rochester Hills.

Oakland University Adds Athletic Facilities

Oakland University is completing construction of a $7.8 million facility to accommodate the university’s NCAA Division I sports, mainly tennis and track and field.   A recreational “super field” will be included in the complex, which will have enough space for multiple activities at the same time.  Read more about this project…

Back to School Clock is Ticking!

The Troy School District is in the midst of completing an ambitious $125 million improvement program, and many of the facilities construction and reconstruction elements are running full speed ahead to be ready for the first day of the 2014/15 school year.

Working with TMP Architecture and Barton Malow, G2 Consulting Group is providing real time response to testing and inspection needs at 11 different sites, maintaining an aggressive construction schedule for this districtwide project. Check out the video below!

Construction crews in Los Angeles set a new world record for a continuous concrete pour, as the foundation for the New Wilshire Grand building (tallest building west of the Mississippi) was laid on Feb. 15. Read More>

This concrete pour is impressive, but from a technical point, the challenge is how do you cool it?  That required over 19 miles of cooling tubes to lower maximum temperatures, and manage differential temperatures, preventing cracking. Read More>
